BEI Sensors’ Award-Winning LP Series Encoders are now Triple Certified for Hazardous Areas


Low profile encoders certified for hazardous areas save space and simplify motion control feedback

LP Series Rotary Encoder ProductsThe award-winning LP Series low profile encoder line from BEI Sensors, a brand of Sensata Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: ST), now has triple certified models available for use in hazardous areas. Built to withstand extreme temperatures, shock and vibration, and wet and dirty environments while saving space, the LP Series streamlines reliable and precise motion control feedback in heavy-duty applications. A variety of mechanical configuration, termination and output options simplify integration into a wide range of installations.

Triple certifications are available for nonincendive/nonsparking, intrinsic safety or explosion proof/flameproof protection methods and include UL/cUL Class I Division 1 and 2, and Class II Division 1 and 2, as well as ATEX and IECEx Zones 1 and 2 ratings, making the encoders safe to use across the globe. The series is ideal for applications where space is at a premium and potentially explosive environments exist such as in oil and gas, chemical and metal processing. In oil and gas applications like top drives, draw works and mud pumps, hazardous area certified encoders that withstand the elements and simplify installation help cut costs in labor and prevent downtime. A removable terminal box option allows the LP Series encoder to be pre-wired, minimizing time spent on installation in the field and helping to avoid costly wiring errors.

The encoders’ industry-leading low profile design is as slim as 26mm (1.02 in) and allows for easy installation into space-restricted applications where available shaft space is limited, such as between industrial duty motor flanges and fans or in back-to-back motor mountings. Tether and pin kits streamline and prevent errors in set-up to ensure successful mounting, which is critical to encoder performance. 

Encapsulated electronics protect the internal components of the IP66-rated encoders from humidity and exposure to the elements. The series can withstand vibration up to 200 m/s2 (55 to 2000 Hz), shock up to 3000 m/s2 (5ms half-sine), and is able to operate in extreme temperatures, from -40°C to +100°C. A standard aluminum anodized housing resists corrosion and ensures long operational life. A programmable option allows for resolution selection from 1 to 10,000 PPR, which reduces lead time and stocking costs, making the encoder versatile in a variety of applications. “We’ve designed mission-critical sensors for use in the most extreme environments for many years and understand the challenges that OEMs are facing.
